Spice Spotlight: Berbere Seasoning
What’s The Story?
In Amharic, the state language of Ethiopia, ‘barbare’ means pepper. So, it should come as no surprise that berbere spice blends are the key to the country’s richly flavored, spicy stews and seasoned meats. Due to Ethiopia's location along several important spice routes for centuries, the country’s cuisine was heavily influenced by other countries Spain, Italy, and France. As a result, berbere blends can range significantly in their ingredients.
